Got there at 1:45, most of the boys were already out there and doing the goof-around warm-up thing. McEvoy and Stanley were partnering each other tapping a ball around, Walsh was getting one-on-one kicking lessons with one of the coaches, Montagna appeared to be giving Armitage some roving pointers and there were the usual smattering of handball drills and players running laps.
Pretty sure I made a sighting of the rare Nicholas Winmar, doing some laps. However he didn't take part in training.
My count was about 34 out there. No sign of Lenny, Bakes or Milne, and I'm pretty sure Steven wasn't out there either. Raph emerged 45 minutes into training to do a little handball work with a coach. Koschitzke, Big Fish and Schneider only ran laps.
First time I've seen Gardiner do a full training session, he only ran laps and did ruckwork the few sessions I made it to last year. Good to see Robert Eddy out there, doing a full session too. He might not be that far away.
Ross the Boss was in attendance, but SOS seemed to be the main one in charge. After the laps and stretches, players took part in a handball drill. When that was over, Ross spoke to the players, even those not fully training.
Another handball drill and some kicking drills. A strong southerly wind made life interesting in the kicking drills. Walsh's kicking is coming along, but still has some distance to go, especially under pressure.
The players split into three groups. In front of me looked like the forwards, Riewoldt, Stanley, Heyne, McQualter, Lynch and A. Smith who were practicing leading. Riewoldt easily turned Stanley inside out again and again, and when Roo was doing the kicking, Stanley shredded his much shorter opponents.
As always, training petered out rather than came to an abrupt end. Players started to make their way up the race, some stayed on the ground for further work. Tommy Walsh was back doing one-on-one with a coach at the far end of the ground.
Was particularly impressed with Mini, whenever a drinks break was called he practiced his shots at goal instead.
Got a couple of pics too, will post in a sec _________________

Tommy Walshenstein getting some kicking lessons
Big Ben practising his rucking skills
Round and round they go
If you think Stanley vs. Roo is unfair, you should've seen Mini try to stop Stanley.
Lynch taking a grab
Nick Heyne impressing a coach
Roo showing how it should be done _________________

Michael Gardiner will play this week and round one.
He looked great this afternoon and completed the full session as well as having a very long chat with Ross. _________________ Old enough to repaint, but young enough to sell |

Tom Lynch is looking like he is ready to take the next step.
He is a class act and will get plenty of game time this year.
Goalkicking practice was a shootout between Tom and Roo, and there was not much in it. Lynchey is on the verge of making a real impact. _________________ Old enough to repaint, but young enough to sell |

once he gets used to the quicker speed of AFL football he will be a beauty, quick mind and smart operator and born to play forward. Set up a couple of goals on saturday night with quick hands _________________ Thankgod for the Saints

Sounds promising, he is one player who could be a real bonus, that elusive 3rd tall... _________________ ROBERT HARVEY A.K.A The Great Man, Banger, Harves, Ol' Man River...

But a couple of weeks away?
You think he will be the Geary of 2009 then, and play a good portion of games? _________________ I use to say that I believed Jimmy could be a part of our best 22, now he believes... |

Tom is not far away and probably closer than I thought.
Geary will probably always be a fringe player (no disrespect).
Lynch will be a gun, and when he gains a start, will stay there. _________________ Old enough to repaint, but young enough to sell |

I disagree about Geary.
I think he could become a really good footballer, he is tough as nails, knows how to lay a tackle, can kick goals and is a very good runner.
I think if it weren't for Andrew McQualter already having secured the defensive small forward post he would have played virtually every game last year.
I hop that Geary plays every game this year and really makes a half back flank role his own to allow Gram to play the pacey wingman role we had earmarked for Lovett... _________________ ROBERT HARVEY A.K.A The Great Man, Banger, Harves, Ol' Man River...

I'm with you. I think he will have a cracker year. Always tough and this year he just looks like a man. Got his body right. Last year he looked like a kid. _________________

I must agree Geary looks much fitter and tougher than last year, but I don't see where he fits into our lineup. _________________ Old enough to repaint, but young enough to sell |

Yes good news on Gardiner.
Personally I quite fancy the Gardiner/Ben ruck dua at the present as it will give us more bite around the ground than with King who struggles a bit in this regard. _________________ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guWsgyIFbB4 |
